Bedding is essential for our daily comfort and health. Whether we are talking about the bedroom at home or hotel rooms, washing bedding correctly means more than just a simple habit—it is a personal hygiene routine and an investment in the durability of the materials.
Bedding comes into direct contact with our skin night after night. During sleep, the material absorbs sweat, dead skin cells, oils, as well as invisible particles such as bacteria, fungi, and dust mites. Washing at the right temperature helps not only with cleaning but also with effective disinfection, especially for people with sensitive skin or allergies.
Recommended temperatures:
- 40°C – sufficient for light refreshing and removing minor stains.
- 60°C – ideal for deep sanitization; it destroys most bacteria and allergens.
- 90°C – recommended only for very durable white bedding, as extreme temperatures can damage delicate materials.
Warning: excessively high temperatures can damage fibers, fade colors, and even set stains if they are not pre-treated.
How do you choose the right temperature based on the material?
Not all bedding is the same. Here is how to adjust the washing temperature according to the type of fabric:
100% Cotton
- Recommendation: 40–60°C
- Although it is a durable material, repeated washing at high temperatures can lead to wear over time.
Cotton Sateen
- Recommendation: maximum 40°C
- The smooth, glossy texture can be affected by high temperatures, so delicate cycles are recommended.
Cotton Damask
- Recommendation: up to 60°C
- A dense fabric with good heat resistance. Ideal for frequent use.
Cotton Percale
- Recommendation: 60°C, sometimes even 70°C in professional settings.
- It withstands higher temperatures well and becomes softer to the touch with each wash.
In the hospitality industry, bedding sanitization is a quality standard. For guest safety:
- Washing is done at a minimum of 60°C, and sometimes even at 70–75°C in industrial settings.
- Special detergents that are effective at high temperatures are used.
- Bedding is specially selected to withstand frequent washing without damage.
In many hotels, bedding is changed after every guest, and in premium settings even daily, for extra comfort and freshness.
Tips for effective washing:
- Pre-treat stains before washing. Avoid using hot water on untreated stains—it can set them.
- Do not overfill the washing machine – the bedding needs room to move for effective cleaning.
- Use the cycle appropriate for the material – cotton: normal, sateen: delicate.
- Extra rinse, especially if you have sensitive skin – it completely removes detergent residue.
Clean bedding means healthy sleep and improved hygiene. Choosing the right temperature based on the material and frequency of use extends the life of the bedding and protects the health of the entire family.
